How to Pack Your Valuables Before a Move

Before a move, the biggest worry for most people is simple: what’s going to happen to all of my valuables? We at Matco Moving Solutions in Calgary, Edmonton and other Canadian locations understand the apprehension that comes with handing your expensive belongings over to moving companies you don’t know. Let us put your mind at ease with a few quick tips about how together, we can ensure the safety and care of your treasured possessions.

What do I do with my smaller valuables?

Misplaced items are a major concern when moving from one home to another. Things have a tendency to disappear over the course of a significant move. It’s impossible to determine whether they’ve been lost or if they’ve simply found their way to the bottom of a box. Lucky for you, there’s a simple solution! Before anything else, take all of your smaller valuables (jewellery, keys, medication, real estate papers, passports, birth certificates, etc.) and keep them in a single box. Within this larger box, keep these items separated to avoid any damage (jewellery should go in a jewellery box and all legal papers should go in expanding folders). This will prevent any misplaced items over the course of your move.

How do I package my art?

At Matco Moving Solutions, we do everything we can to ensure the safety of your valuables while they’re under our care. That being said, we understand the need to take extra precautions when it comes to your sculptures, oil paintings and other pieces of one-of-a-kind art. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize the possibility of ever damaging these items. First and foremost, they should never be left loose during the course of a move. Always package your paintings in boxes (preferably ones made of wood). These boxes should be packed at the bottom with crumpled paper and Styrofoam packing peanuts. Next, wrap your painting in a thick layer of bubble wrap (the painting should feel tightly wrapped with all the edges carefully secured). Once you’ve done that, secure the opening of the box with packing tape. If you are having difficulty finding an appropriate box for the job, ask your movers. They will often have specialized custom boxes made specifically for the job.

Should I buy extra insurance?

When it comes to peace of mind, it’s never a bad idea to go the extra mile. Most Calgary and Edmonton moving companies offer extra insurance for the transport of your valuables. We here at Matco Moving Solutions offer two different protection plans for your convenience. Remember to take pictures and document your valuables to facilitate the process should you need to make a claim.
